Thailand needs to become Age-Friendly, and fast!

Last year, the IMF country report on Thailand warned that the pace of demographic transition (ageing) is similar to that in Korea and Singapore, but those countries are experiencing it at much higher levels of income. Among emerging economies in the region, only China’s transition is almost as rapid, but China is developing considerably faster than Thailand.

This article in Singapore’s Straits Times explains some of the Thai governments initiatives but there’s no mention of the WHO Age-Friendly Cities programme a blueprint for countries and cities that are serious about their infrastructural readiness for an ageing population.

A recent exhibition on ageing Thailand held in Bangkok suggests there is new and increasingly public recognition of the opportunities and challenges but clearly Thailand has some rapid catching up to do.
