At the end of 2014 nearly a quarter of Beijing’s registered residents were 60 years old or more.
According to data revealed by the office for senior citizens there are now 2.967 million over-60s in Beijing accounting for 22.3 percent of the registered population.
Over-70s accounted for nearly half the total elderly population in the city.
China’s population is aging rapidly, with 202 million people, or nearly 15 percent of the total population, at or above the age of 60 by the end of 2013, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs. This number is expected to exceed 300 million by 2025.
The 50-plus population in China is already greater than the entire population of the USA.
