Digital-savvy seniors want to use digital tools to manage their health – not healthcare

Contrary to the popular belief that only younger generations are technology adopters, the ageing population is riding the e-health wave.

According to the Accenture 2014 Patient Engagement Survey of more than 10,000 consumers in the United States and nine other countries, including about 350 US seniors. It was an online study so read the results with that skew in mind. Powerful nevertheless;

  • 82% feel an inherent motivation to actively manage their general health
  • 36% think that new technology has made it easier
  • 61% want new technology to do this
  • 62% say that technology is important for managing their health because it helps them to improve their health or understand conditions or medications

As was revealed in a landmark segmentation study conducted by the British NHS some time ago, attitude plays a huge part in health behaviour (see graphic).

Silver surfers are more likely to perform health management activities than peers who think technology is “not at all important” to health management.
