Thailand among fastest ageing in SE Asia

Almost one in five would be over 60 by 2025 and nearly one in three by 2050.

Thailand’s population is ageing faster than any other nation in Southeast Asia, except Singapore, an International Labour Organisation study says.

The proportion of people over 60 more than doubled between 1975 and 2007, from about 5% of the population to 11% (7.2 million people). The cause was a decline in both mortality and fertility, said the report, released yesterday to coincide with Thailand’s National Day for Older Persons.
